VIRTUOUS AMATEUR RADIO “The most versatile hobby on earth”
Acceptance, beauty, commitment, compassion, confidence, contentment, courage, courtesy, creativity, detachment, diligence, discernment, enthusiasm, excellence, faith, flexibility, forgiveness, generosity, gentleness, grace, gratitude, humility, idealism, integrity, joy, justice, kindness, love, loyalty, moderation, order, patience, peace, perseverance, purity, purposefulness, respect, responsibility, reverence, righteousness, sacrifice, self-discipline, service, tolerance, trust, trustworthiness, truthfulness, unity, wisdom and wonder. The above-listed characteristics and more, may be found in most all Hams all over the globe. Of course, some of these may be more well-developed and noticeable and some less, but the point is that in general, Hams do exhibit these traits as standards.
We are talking here about the thousands and thousands of Hams to be found round the world just practicing the hobby out of the love for it. The minority of non-conforming groaners that is always to be found in any of life’s offerings are not included; though I suppose, we should not judge them too quickly, they will also get there I believe. As a long-time participant in this amazing hobby I have noticed the personal growth in many a Ham that immerses himself in Ham Radio. It just comes naturally, you cannot help being influenced by what the hobby offers. The hobby instils the above-mentioned traits into you through the years and hones those that you already have. Never have I seen the reverse take place, even Ham wives are usually glad their Ham husbands are kept out of mischief by the hobby.
“Amateur Radio – the most versatile hobby on earth” are blessed with myriads of members the likes of which are described by OM George in his little poem below. We should not be misguided by the few who do not conform, we should rather have the courage to respect and acknowledge the virtuous characteristics that Amateur Radio finds and enhances in each of its participants.
A virtuous person…
Is clean both inside and outside.
Neither looks up to the rich or down on the poor.
Loses, if need be without squealing.
Wins without bragging.
Is always considerate of women, children, and old people.
Is too brave to lie.
Is too generous to cheat.
Takes his share of the world and lets other people have theirs.
~ George Washington Carver
We should all strive to be a virtuous person always, and trust me I know, Amateur Radio is one of the ways for any person to achieve this goal in life.
